Healthy and Equitable Futures (HEF) is a long-term initiative of the Greater Rochester Health Foundation. Our vision is for every child in Monroe County to grow up healthy, supported, and thriving. To reach that goal, we focus on whole child health, which includes physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
We know that structural racism drives inequities in health and education outcomes for Black and Latino children. Real change requires shifting systems, addressing power imbalances, and investing in community strengths. That’s why HEF works through a Learning Collaborative that brings together parents, nonprofits, and community partners. Together, we are learning, experimenting, and acting to make Rochester a place where all children can thrive.
To guide this work, HEF has identified three interconnected “Levers for Change.” These levers are areas where progress can spark transformation across systems and help build healthier, more equitable futures.
Racial Equity & Inclusion: Building systems that reflect the diversity, strengths, and leadership of Black and Latino communities.
Equitable Parent Engagement: Shifting power so families are central decision-makers in the systems that affect their children.
Socio-Emotional Wellness: Ensuring every child has access to culturally responsive supports and safe, nurturing environments.
We call them “levers” because they represent points of influence. When we push on them through policy change, organizational practice, and shared leadership, we create ripple effects that move whole systems.
